Reading a plier specification: capacity, hardness and why it matters
Cutter specifications look like marketing until you have ruined a pair. Then they read very differently.
Three capacities, not one
A cutter is normally rated for soft, medium and hard wire, and the three figures differ substantially: a plier rated 3.4 mm soft might be rated only 1.8 mm hard.
- Soft wire: copper, aluminium, annealed material
- Medium-hard wire: mild steel, most fasteners and nails
- Hard wire: spring steel, piano wire, hardened material
Edge hardness sets the ceiling
A general-purpose cutting edge sits around 58–62 HRC. Piano wire and spring steel need an induction-hardened edge above 64 HRC.
Cutting hard wire with a soft edge does not blunt it evenly. It puts a discrete notch in the edge at the point of contact, and that notch never comes out. The tool will still cut, badly, forever after.
Flush cutters are a different tool entirely
A flush cutter has no bevel on one face, which is how it leaves a lead cut level with the solder joint. That geometry is fragile by definition.
Single-bevel plastic nippers go further still. Some will not cut any metal at all, and one attempt ends the edge. That is not a defect; it is the trade-off for a cut that needs no sanding afterwards. Keep an ordinary nipper on the bench for everything else.
Joints
A box joint, where one handle passes through a slot in the other, keeps the jaws aligned far better than a lapped or riveted joint. On precision cutters that alignment is what makes a flush cut possible, so it is worth the extra cost.
