Ryoba, dozuki, kataba and flush-cut
What to know
Japanese saws cut on the pull stroke. Because the plate is in tension rather than compression it can be made much thinner without buckling, which gives a kerf around half that of a Western saw and takes far less effort per cut. Ryoba have two edges. Rip on one side, crosscut on the other. Dozuki have a stiffening spine for joinery. Impulse-hardened teeth cannot be resharpened, so the blade is a consumable.
