Edge tools should not touch each other in storage. A chisel rattling against another chisel is the most common way a freshly honed edge gets chipped before it reaches the work. Canvas and leather rolls hold each tool in its own pocket and let steel breathe, which matters more than it sounds for anything stored in an unheated shop.
