A ryoba is two saws in one plate. Coarse rip teeth along one edge for cutting with the grain, finer crosscut teeth along the other for cutting across it. Using the wrong edge is the most common mistake and it shows immediately in how hard the saw is to push.

Because Japanese saws cut on the pull stroke the plate stays in tension and can be made much thinner than a Western saw. At 0.6 mm the kerf is roughly half that of a panel saw, which means less material removed, less effort, and a cut you can follow accurately.

The teeth are impulse-hardened. They stay sharp far longer than an unhardened tooth but cannot be resharpened. When the blade is done, you fit a new one rather than filing it.
